Frequently Asked Questions

We dry our firewood the old-fashioned way, with time, wind and sunshine until it measures at or below 20% moisture content.
If your firewood is not dried sufficiently, not only will it be hard to light and a smoldering mess, but much of the energy that you want to be converted to heat and/or flames will be wasted trying to “cook” the moisture out of the wood as it is burning.
We only deliver “dry, ready to burn today” firewood. The only exception to this is if you request higher moisture in your cooking wood or in your heating wood for long term storage.

The best firewood for you depends on what you are going to use it for.. We offer a campfire mix, a heating mix, and various species for very specific purposes like cooking and deep winter heating.
-
Our standard firewood size is 16” in length and our split size is such that anyone in the household can easily handle a piece with one hand.
We can accommodate other sizes but they must be ordered well in advance.
-
Our campfire mix can be used in fire pits as well as in your fireplace when the purpose of your fire is more geared toward ambience and flame than providing heat. It may contain species like cherry, maple, ash, elm, box elder, hackberry, sassafras and others.
-
Our heating mix may contain oak, hickory, cherry, black locust, hard maple, american beech, ash and others for a higher BTU output and more heat to warm up those cold winter nights.
-
We generally stock white oak, red oak, hickory, cherry and apple for your cooking and smoking needs in both chunks and firewood length.

Because we dry our firewood in IBC totes, we offer loosely thrown small IBC totes (275 Gallons, approximately 1/4 cord) and large IBC totes (330 Gallons, approximately 1/3 cord).
We also offer full cords and multiples thereof. Our campfire or cooking bundles are available in either .75 or 1 cubic foot sizes.
Our typical minimum size bulk firewood order is a small IBC tote which could last an entire burning season if you only have occasional fires. To contrast that, we have customers who burn 24/7 throughout the coldest part of winter that will order 4 to 5 full cords.

We recommend building a “platform” out of medium sized kindling wood on the bottom to initially insulate your fire from the ground or the bottom of the fireplace. Place some paper and/or cardboard on top to act as your fire starter.
Then begin to add small pieces of wood in a tic-tac-toe pattern on top of the paper.
Ignite the paper and gradually add larger and larger pieces of firewood until your fire is fully developed.
To make it even easier, use a commercially available bio-mass or haystack type fire starter instead of paper.

GOOD: Store your firewood off of the ground on a rack, pallet or in an IBC tote.
BETTER: As above, but cover the top of your firewood with something water resistant like a tarp, plastic or a piece of metal roofing. We recommend only covering about 1/4 of the way down the sides so the wood can “breathe” and continue to dry.
BEST: Store your firewood off the ground inside a shed or garage.
